About this skill
Spec-First Build
Agents build fast and build the wrong thing. This skill puts two cheap gates in front of the code. First the agent finds out what you actually want and why, lays out two or three ways to build it with trade-offs, and writes a design doc you approve. Then it turns that design into a plan of small test-first tasks with exact files, function signatures and the command that proves each one works. Only then does it write code, one task at a time, watching each test fail before it passes, keeping a ledger so it never redoes work after its context is compacted, and ending with one fresh review of the whole branch.
How it works. Type /spec-first-build with your idea, or just ask your agent to build something non-trivial. Stage 1 (brainstorm) asks one question at a time and plays back what it understood. Stage 2 (plan) writes docs/plans/<date>-<feature>.md with a header, global constraints, a review-focus list and numbered tasks. Stage 3 (execute) runs the tasks with helper scripts (task-start, task-done, review-package) and reports every judgment call it made on your behalf under "Rulings I made".
Mid-way entry. Already have a spec? It starts at the plan. Already have a plan? It starts at execution.

What we changed
- Chained three upstream skills under one entry point and made them self-contained: references to Superpowers skills that are not included (worktrees, TDD, verification, debugging, branch finishing) are replaced with short inline rules, and the executor's helper scripts are bundled next to it.
- Removed the upstream "visual companion" (a local web server that loads a remote image by default). The brainstorm stage uses text sketches or a throwaway HTML mockup instead.
- Renamed output folders to
docs/specs/,docs/plans/and.spec-first/sdd/. - Normalized frontmatter to the SKILL.md spec and added attribution (
NOTICE.md,LICENSES/). Full list of edits inNOTICE.md.
Checked against
Claude Code 2.1.317 (desktop app, Claude Opus 5.5), 2026-11-07. Installed under .claude/skills/spec-first-build/, loaded from SKILL.md and run end to end on CSV export for a small Node module: brainstorm (design doc), a two-task plan, inline execution with all six helper scripts exiting 0, a fresh Opus reviewer that found two real issues, both fixed test-first; five commits on a feature branch. Two scripts and three instructions were tightened afterwards (NOTICE.md). The example output on this page is from that run, shortened. Not yet checked: automatic triggering from the skill description in a fresh session (the run started from an explicit request), and Codex, Cursor, GitHub Copilot and Gemini CLI, which read the same SKILL.md format but have not been run.
How to install
Copy the files/ folder of the download to either location in your project:
.agents/skills/spec-first-build/(Codex, Cursor, Copilot, Gemini CLI and others that read.agents/skills).claude/skills/spec-first-build/(Claude Code)
Or download the zip from this page and unpack it there. Stage 3 needs bash and a git repository with at least one commit. If your unzip tool drops exec bits, the scripts still run through bash, or restore them with chmod +x executing-plans/scripts/*. Add .spec-first/ to .gitignore if you like; the scripts already write a self-ignoring .gitignore there.
Not a fit
One-line fixes and quick tweaks (the skill notices and just does them), and throwaway spikes where you want speed over correctness.
