About this skill
Grill Me, Then Write the Spec
Most plans fail on a question nobody asked. This skill makes your agent ask all of them before any code exists: it maps your plan as a tree of decisions, asks every question that can be answered right now in one numbered round, gives its own recommended answer to each, and keeps going until nothing is left assumed. When you are done, it turns the conversation into a spec and then into tickets an agent can pick up one at a time.
How it works. Type /grill-me-then-spec with your plan. Each round you answer with "yes" to accept a recommendation or write your own answer. Facts it can look up itself (what the code does today, which libraries are installed) it looks up instead of asking you. When the tree is settled, say "write the spec": it writes problem, solution, a long list of user stories, implementation and testing decisions, and out-of-scope. Say "make tickets" and it slices the work into vertical tracer-bullet tickets, each with acceptance criteria and the tickets that block it, and checks the breakdown with you before publishing.
Where it publishes. Local markdown files under .scratch/<feature>/ by default, or GitHub Issues, GitLab or Linear if you prefer. It asks once.

What we changed
- Bundled three upstream skills into one installable skill with a single entry point.
- Inlined the grilling interview (upstream
grill-meonly forwards to a separategrillingskill), so nothing else needs to be installed. - Replaced the dependency on the upstream setup command with a short
tracker.mdthat picks a tracker or defaults to local files. - Normalized frontmatter to the SKILL.md spec and added attribution (
NOTICE.md,LICENSES/).
The interview rules, spec template and ticket rules are the upstream text. Full list of edits in NOTICE.md.
Checked against
Claude Code 2.1.317 (desktop app, Claude Opus 5.5), 2026-11-07. Installed under .claude/skills/grill-me-then-spec/, loaded from SKILL.md and run end to end on a "team workspaces" feature in a small Node invoicing app: three grilling rounds (one recommended answer declined on purpose to test a branch), then the spec and four tracer-bullet tickets published as local markdown files per tracker.md. Every referenced file resolved; nothing needed fixing. The example output on this page is from that run, shortened. Not yet checked: automatic triggering from the skill description in a fresh session (the run started from an explicit request), and Codex, Cursor, GitHub Copilot and Gemini CLI, which read the same SKILL.md format but have not been run.
How to install
Copy the files/ folder of the download to either location in your project:
.agents/skills/grill-me-then-spec/(Codex, Cursor, Copilot, Gemini CLI and others that read.agents/skills).claude/skills/grill-me-then-spec/(Claude Code)
Or download the zip from this page and unpack it there. Then start a new agent session and type /grill-me-then-spec followed by your plan.
Not a fit
Quick, fully specified tasks: the interview adds rounds you do not need. Use it when the plan still has open decisions.
